Summer Fete Themed Wedding Cupcakes

Well it’s been an age since I’ve had chance to do a blog post….not that it means I haven’t been busy spreading the Rosy Cheeks Bakery Love!

It being a lovely sunny bank holiday today this particular Wedding Cake seemed ideal to blog about.  The lovely Lorraine of Eclipse Body Art in Newquay went and got herself hitched this year…please see glamorous picture below of the beautiful bride!

Lorraine decided to hold her wedding reception in her very own backyard, and despite the weather trying to put a dampener on this Summer Fete Style Wedding nothing stopped this being an amazing evening in which guests were treated to the likes of hay bales, home-cooked food, camping, and traditional British Fete games – there was even a coconut shy!

With this in mind we decided upon keeping to this theme and creating a mixture of different cupcakes that all worked beautifully together…toadstools, flowers and tiny caterpillars adorned the Wedding Cupcake tower each one secretly filled with delicious caramel that would only be discovered as it was curiously bitten into…anyway enough from me see for yourselves…

Lorraine is an amazing artist and you can check out her work here and while on the subject it would be a perfect time to reveal my cupcake themed tattoo! I gave Lorraine an illustration by one of my favourite artists Kate Wilson.  The illustrations are all based on the idea that birds have secret lives and this is the end result – Lorraine I can’t thank you enough! x

Personalised Birthday Cupcakes

It’s been a while since I have had a chance to post – what with my day job and the numerous cake orders its been crazy hectic busy! Now it is the Easter Hols and I have time to breath I am going to catch up with a bit of blogging.

This blog post is dedictated to some personalised birthday cupcakes for a young lady called Bronte who loves making cakes almost as much as she does eating them!  Her lovely  mum ordered a dozen cakes with me and asked for them to be girlie and pink…and we all know that is a Rosy Cheeks speciality!

The cakes are a mixture of chocolate and vanilla all filled with a gooey rich toffee caramel centre which oozes out as you bite in…

No sooner had this order come in – another two popped up as well so I am afraid my blog is going to be a little cupcake orientated for the next couple of posts!  However there is a very special birthday cake I have been working on over the past couple of weeks I will be posting up soon…I just have to wait as the recipient reads the blog so its all a little hush hush!

A 21st Birthday Cake to Remember…

Sisters are one of those things in life that can one minute drive you crazy and the next fill you with love (trust me I have three of them!).  Well I am pretty sure that when the sister of this birthday girl got in touch to ask me to make her sister a surprise birthday cake for her 21st it was all about the love…

Sometimes when your making someone a cake they give you complete creative freedom except maybe a colour theme or a favourite flower and this was one of those occasions the only word I was given was pink…and we all know I can happily work with that!  The other request was that the birthday wishes were to read ‘Happy 21st Ickle Pickle’ something I am sure is an inside joke that only sisters can have!

I chose to keep to two shades; a deep hot pink and a baby pink complemented playfully by the gentle soft green used in the leaves, swirls and lettering.  I added tiny sugar pearls to the cake for that added touch of girlie glamour. And finally a few tiny butterflies gently landing on the flowers collecting sweet sugar nectar.  Creating sugarcraft flowers this way and in this quantity may seem like a nightmare job for most but for me, somehow I get a sense of tranquility and peace as I work and this transcends into the cakes I create, or, at least I hope it does.

This cake was genuinely beautiful, each individual flower sparkled as the light hit the petals; roses, petunia’s and hydrangea’s.  Perfect for a weekend when the Spring sunshine is high in the sky.

The final picture? The two sisters at the moment the birthday girl received her surprise cakey goodness; I mean that’s what Rosy Cheeks is all about; Love & Cake…and of course a sprinkle of glamour!

Cascading Floral Beauty

You may remember a couple of weeks ago I put up a post titled ‘Turtle Power’ showcasing a two cute little fondant turtles I had made in anticipation of a 12th birthday cake I had been asked to make for twins Billie & Frankie.

The cake was inspired by a hint of vintage (of course!) combined with the girls love of pink and flowers so I decided to theme the cake as though the turtles had been caught in a gust of wind that had blown beautiful flowers cascading down all around them.  This is to date my favourite cake to have made and I really hope that when the two girls in question see it for the first time they are as happy with it on their Birthday as I was to make it for them.

Turtle Power

I thought I would share these adorable little sugar paste turtles that I spent yesterday afternoon making ready for a 12th birthday cake I will be making in a couple of weeks! (full cake post then)  They just have that ‘awww’ factor that perfectly suits a cold winters afternoon snuggled up in doors!

Personalised Cupcakes

Cupcakes have become more and more popular for gift giving…be it to toast the arrival of a new baby, to celebrate a birthday or special event, or maybe even to just add a little edible sparkle at special times of the year such as Christmas, Easter and New Year!

These cupcakes were ordered by one of my closest friends for whom I had also made her wedding cupcake tower.  The children at the wedding loved the cakes so much that Louisa wanted to surprise them at Christmas with their own personalised batch of sparkling cupcakes..

Frolicking in the meadow

During December I was set the task of creating a birthday cake that had a little old lady and a black labrador on top – descriptively I was told it should look just like my labrador friend Louie…I have to say I had so much fun making this cake!

I decided to sit the old lady in a green meadow picking flowers in the grass with her faithful friend sitting next to her, the final characters turned out so cutely!  I have since found out that the birthday girl who received this cake loved the little characters so much she wanted to keep them…but her actual doggy companion had other ideas and quickly devoured them whilst left alone for only a few moments! All I can say is typical labrador behaviour!

The cake hidden under the fondant icing is a rich dark chocolate cake with chocolate ganache buttercream.

Gooey Caramel Cupcakes

I am currently trying to catch up on blog posts having just about recovered from the festive season in which I have been busier than ever creating delicious cakes and treats!

As it was Christmas I decided to add a hint of ginger (a festive spice!) and little miniature gingerbread men for that final festive flare!  I should add however that these cakes are to be enjoyed at any time of the year and work just as well without the ginger in all their caramel goodness!

These particular cupcakes seem to be a firm favourite with family and friends due to their indulgently rich gooey caramel centre that oozes out as you sink your teeth in…

how did Justin Bieber end up atop my Christmas Cake?

Before we start strange blog topic I know.

It is now January 4th and hopefully everyone is well rested, stuffed to the brim with sweet goodies and ready to kick their New Year’s Resolutions into 2012 with a bang! A couple of weeks ago I posted a sneak peak of the choir boys that would sit atop my Christmas cake this year and without knowing it (and completly oblivious to it until my 15yr old sister pointed it out!) I had created the pint sized pop star Justin Bieber out of sugar….not sure realistically how I feel about this but I still think they are all super cute!

So below are the final pictures of my Christmas Cake for 2011 I hope you enjoy and it gives you something to think about when you attempt a Christmas Cake in 2012!

Happy New Year to all the readers of this blog – I hope 2012 brings much love, happiness and cakey goodness into your lives!

Who needs riches when you can eat millionnaires shortbread?

The weekend was a little wet and miserable and the winter blues were setting in so I decided to cheer up the troops with a moreish batch of Millionnaires Shortbread.  For anybody who hasn’t tried this before its a combination of rich butter shortbread, gooey caramel and a final layer of chunky milk chocolate, I think its the combination of textures that makes these so popular.  I decided to top them with some tinsy tiny golden edible stars to stay in the spirit of the upcoming Christmas events! Next post will be Almond Frangipane topped Mince Pies – for those of you who like traditional with a modern twist!
